Italy coach Marcello Lippi admitted that his side had been far from their best in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory in Montenegro.
Goals from Andrea Pirlo and Giampaolo Pazzini gave the Azzurri three points in Podgorica and kept the holders on course for a place at the 2010 finals in South Africa.
Lippi told Rai Sport: "We did not play well in the first half, however we remained disciplined and we earned the benefits.
"In the second half though, we played with personality and character and we created many opportunities as a result.
"Now we have a two-point lead over Ireland, a team that we will play on Wednesday. We have a big chance to increase this advantage further."
